Montreal survives the chaos while Tampa Bay learns that “almost” doesn’t count in playoff hockey.

The Montreal Canadiens opened their playoff series with a dramatic 4–3 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning, and this one had just about everything—goals, momentum swings, and just enough chaos to keep everyone uncomfortable until the final seconds.

From the start, both teams played like they had no interest in easing into the series. Chances came quickly, goals followed, and the game turned into a back-and-forth battle where nobody could hold control for long. Montreal found ways to strike, but Tampa answered often enough to make sure this never felt settled.

At different points, it looked like either team could take over. The Lightning pushed, the Canadiens responded, and the scoreboard kept moving. It became one of those games where every goal felt important—and also immediately at risk of being erased.

The difference came in the small moments. Montreal capitalized just enough, defended just well enough, and held on just long enough. Tampa Bay had chances late, pressing for the equalizer, but couldn’t quite find that final breakthrough. Close, competitive, and just out of reach.

Game 1 goes to Montreal, who take a 1–0 series lead and a boost of confidence from a high-pressure win. For Tampa Bay, the message is simple: you were right there—but in the playoffs, “right there” still puts you behind.
